KFI's Vision

KFI envisions a Mindanao where empowered communities of Lumad (indigenous people), Muslim and sttler, men and women live in peace respecting each others' cultures and faiths, owning the land they till, having equal access to productive resources and social services, engaging in sustainable enterprises, participating freely in governing their communities and enjoying nature's gifts and fruits of their labor.

Mindanao: The land of promise where the poor barely survive amidst vast fertile lands.

Why so many poor?

They are excluded from productive opportunities because of unclear or non-existent property rights to land, forests, water and fisheries; limited access to financial services and markets; inadequate protection against natural disasters and lack of participation in decision making.

What should be done?

The key to sustainable rural development is to secure appropriateness access, tenure and property rights f0or the rural poor. They cannot benefit from their efforts and therefor lack the incentives to invest in sustainable practices of land management. The resulting land degradation and soil loss threaten the livelihood of millions of people as well as the future of food security, water resources and conservation of biodiversity.

This viscous cycle linking poverty to the degradation of natural resources can be broken by ensuring that the rural poor have access to land, water, credit information, technology and markets and direct participation in decision making process at local, regional, national and international levels.

"The main tools of a sustainable agriculture and rural development are policy and agrarian reform, participation, income diversification and improved management of inputs."
